How to Define a Custom Brush in Photoshop-
For this demo we will create a path of footprints.

STEP 1: FIND OR MAKE A SINGULAR ITEM TO PATTERN

A single foot print pulled from tha' interwubs. Note how the background color is set to Pure White: #FFFFFF

STEP 2: LETS MAKE A SECOND FOOT AND ALTER IT SLIGHTLY

Using copy and paste, I have moved the second foot and then altered it through erasing and clone-stamping:

STEP 3: COLORIZE

Lets add a little bit of mud color to the feet by making a new layer, filling it with an warm brown or orange, and then set the blend mode to lighten. For more control, try adjusting the opacity of our additional layer. I like using a little bit of color here to preivew how the brush will eventually look when used. This step doesn't really effect the brushes performance (in terms of color) later on, as all we are defining is shape and luminence. You could also make an adjutment layer in this case.

STEP 4: DEFINE THE IMAGE AS A BRUSH

This step will set our image as a brush to use in Photoshop. Edit--->Define Brush Preset. Then name the brush and hit "ok".

STEP 5: TEST IT OUT

Make a new document (mine was 1024x1024) and choose a color for the brush. Now we can see how that red overrides the color i demoed earlier. Choose a Master Diameter for the brush and stamp with it.

STEP 6: RANDOMIZE

Lets now edit the randomization of the brush. We will alter the size and angle jitter, but make sure the minimum diameter is at 100%.... our feet aren't growing and shrinking as we walk. The Angel Jitter is controlled by pen pressure here so that when using a pen tablet (which I was for this demo), I can alter the direction of my "path" on the fly. Now by stamping, we get the following effect:

STEP 7: EVEN MORE RANDOMIZATION

I gave the brush the slightest bit of scattering, and then under the color dynamics section I have adjusted the hue, saturation, and brightness jitter to give a slight ammount of tone varriance to the brush each time it is pressed. Note, if the color used on the brush has no saturation in the first place (it is black, grey or white) the hue and saturation jitter will not add any color.

STEP 8: DONE

Take a walk with your new custom brush!
