MAA 4400: 3d Characters for Animation Production Students will concept characters from established narratives, then create the models and textures needed for these to become rigged and animated in collaboration with the students in the MA4403 Production Team course. Weeks 6 thru 8: Texturing
Due at the start of class in week 9:
Characters Textured and Sculpted
We now move into the texturing phase of this course. Since all of you are also familiar with the pre-requesites of texturing, please use the notes and tutorials below to aid you as we continue through additional weeks of lab-time and character check-in.
For my Character, I moved along to Zbrush sculpting first, creating detail for wrinkles and folds in his clothing, adding alphas for the leather and cloth, and even sculpting in some razor buzz for his shaved head which will be underneath his mop-top dynamic hair added later in Maya.

From there I was able to generate my multiple Normal and Displacement Maps and put them together into my two UV layouts. Using Zbrush to crop and fill those displacements, I was able to generate some material captures that then became the basis for my color and spec maps. (click on image for larger)

It is useful to do a displacement test, as you see here, early on, to make sure that your maps are working correctly. I used an alpha gain of 0.400 and and alpha offset of -0.200 to get my heights looking the way they are. This render is without the normal maps applied. I will use this information to judge just how much information i should be including (baking) into my color maps as I begin that portion of the process.

Here is a test of the character with only the color textures applied through a surface shader. An Ambient Occlusion pass has also been composited in this render to aid in seeing form. No lighting has been set up yet, and no materials other than surface shaders are being used. This allows me to test just how much detail I really have in my color map.
