MAA 1112: Drawing and Anatomy

Continuing to develop the basic drawings course, students will focus on rendering life forms in space. Emphasis will be placed on the basic anatomical structures of human and animal forms.

 

JUMP TO A SPECIFIC WEEK:

Week4: Head, Hands and Feet-Structure, Proportion and Foreshortening

Lecture: Quick crit. of Skull/Head & Neck. Head, Hand & Feet, structure, proportions, foreshortening. Shading, building form through structure, trapped shape , using toned paper as middle value for volume shading.
Lab: Practice with model, looking at Traped Space (image immediately below) and Drawing from the Torso Sculpture (next image below), and then looking at foreshortening (3rd image below):

Homework:
1. Finish Midterm assignment: Rendering of front and back views of Head & Torso (from head to mid-thigh) in color on Bristol (or WC paper), labeled: One side of each showing inner muscle structure, the other side of each, showing outer flesh. Label according to handout/lecture notes. Labeling may be on tracing paper overlay.(Note, Simblet does not go far enough! Use other reference(s) as well. EXAMPLES OF STUDENT WORK:

2. Study for Midterm labeling Exam: Full skeleton & major front and back torso muscles.

3. Turn in 8 ½ x 11” paper portfolio with copies of first four major assignments (Bones, Skeletons, Skull, with Face, Midterm Torsos and one drawing from each week in-class model session.) in plastic sleeves and any extra credit or re-do work.

Materials for next week: Good drawing materials for Midterm rendering, including good drawing paper/Bristol/toned paper/Canson, all sharpened charcoal pencils, including white, soft vine charcoal, drawing boards, etc. Tracing paper essential! (Limited palette color optional.)
