MAA 1112: Drawing and Anatomy

Continuing to develop the basic drawings course, students will focus on rendering life forms in space. Emphasis will be placed on the basic anatomical structures of human and animal forms.

Lecture: Syllabus, class overview. The Skeleton & Gesture: Underlying structure and lines of action; ‘anatomical’ gesture and contour drawing; general proportions of the skeleton.    
Lab: Practice exercises with model. We will create gesture and contour drawings, looking at proportions all class long.

  
Homework:
1. Anatomy of Two Bones: On one sheet of Bristol in graphite, draw freehand using line and careful shading show the structure, relative proportions, and illusion of 3-dimensionality, one view each of a femur and a humerus. Label each according to Albinus. (Reference pp. 106-7, 168-9) EXAMPLES OF STUDENT WORK:

2. First part of Three Views of Skeleton assignment: Render on 1/3 sheet of Bristol, leaving room for front and back, Side View of Skeleton, in proportion and labeled according to handout. Use Albinus for reference. (See Week 2 for more details. EXAMPLE OF STUDENT WORK:

3rd week grades based on these assignments, attendance, participation, 3rd week quiz etc.)


3. Read/study Simblet: Pg. 6-33, 64-69, and 244-245.
Materials for the following weeks: ALL basic supplies, esp. conte crayon, newsprint and good drawing
paper, micro-pen (see list). Remember to bring several sheets of clean
tracing paper each week. ABSOLUTELY NO GRAHITE ON NEWSPRINT IN THIS CLASS.
*Note: You will need to scan onto a disk and make an
8 ½ x 11” copy of each of your homework assignments throughout the quarter to turn in at midterm and eventually as your final Hardcopy Portfolio. (The midterm one will be returned to you to continue adding assignments up through your final rendering and final project. The final one will be kept by Instructor/Ai. Make an additional copy to keep for yourself.
